Artist Reinier Lagendijk, born in 1969, specializes in crafting sculptures, installations, and pieces for public spaces. Currently residing and working in the South of France, Lagendijk’s artistic endeavors extend to temporary works, particularly those not intended for public spaces. His sculptures and installations, imbued with a temporal nature, intricately mirror the cycles of nature itself – from growth to decline. These artistic expressions often demand years for fruition, as the chosen materials, predominantly of a vegetative nature, dictate that the form in which they are exhibited will inevitably undergo transformation, reflecting the inherent impermanence within the art.

Malleability of nature

In these ephemeral sculptures and installations Lagendijk plays with the (malleability) of nature. He does not shy away from experimentation and often the end goal is not so much a design but a description (and manipulation) of a growth process. He likes to see himself in the role of homo ludens (man at play) who not only allows himself to be amazed, but also likes to play, with nature as his toy.
He influences growth processes, and allows his works to result in predetermined forms. The formal language consists of archetypal images, which reside in our common consciousness. He allows nature to dialogue with non-natural materials, such as steel or plastic. This produces humorous and poetic images.

Ceramic plants

The cultivation of nature and our influence on nature is always his starting point and source of inspiration. Lagendijk’s recent work are ceramic plants whose leaves are composed of fingerprints of themselves. Where his living work deals with (the) malleability and impermanence, he can now shape this (malleability) through clay, and the impermanence of his sculptures solidify into time.
