When the digital collides with the physical, exciting things emerge. Take, for instance, this range of car navigation devices that were designed for TomTom. On the front of the design, the user has full and uncluttered focus on the digital navigation interface, combined with a functional and branded 3D shape on the back of the device.
Design added value engineering
Based on Tomtom’s successful Nav 4 range, WAACS created a consistent brand-led design across the range from entry-level, two levels of mid-range, to premium devices. By minimizing the edges around the interface and adding detailing to the injection molded part, the updated design looks good without spending money on additional CMF treatments.
On the real world side of the device WAACS came up with a number of better mounting alternatives that are easy and more intuitive to use. The circular mount aesthetic is an integral part of the brand-led design that works seamlessly in the real-world of a car interior.
The WAACS story
As a so called ‘boutique studio’ WAACS is able to work fast and at a more reasonable rate compared to corporate design firms part of larger consultancy groups. This project shows that it only takes 6 weeks and a limited budget to reimagine your project range without reinventing the complete product architecture.
