Damen ASD Tug 3213 tugboat for which WAACS developed a new concept pilot house and steering consoles was selected one of ten nominees for Rotterdam Design Prize 2009. The Nomination Committee drew up the shortlist from one hundred and sixty-seven entries submitted by designers, agencies, clients and intermediaries.
How do you make a captain in a tugboat even better at his work? Inspired by car design and its use of integrated elements in dashboards, WAACS answered by adding more ergonomics, more modern shapes along with Damen-branded surroundings to their tugboats.
Inside, the new consoles got an optimized layout of buttons – all integrated in the console top to give the captain a superior overview. WAACS gathered all loose equipment and integrated it in panels for easy operating while sitting down.
Furthermore WAACS came up with a solution for operating in a backwards sitting position. For a well balanced indoor climate air conditioning was added as well as a anti-fog window solution. Also WAACS initiated the modular system for the interior walls to give them a less industrial look.
