Medical Product Design

Finding new solutions that improve people's everyday lives

Improving lives with medical product design

WAACS is an expert in medical product design and health & care solutions. We find innovative solutions that are able to make a real impact on the user’s life. We have designed prosthetics, health connected devices for personal care, soft goods and smart textiles using a user-centered design approach.

Prosthetics and bionics

We see ourselves as the ambassador of the user. At WAACS we love making small steps that have a large positive impact, especially if those steps are taken by prosthetic users. Together with Össur, we leverage our expertise to enhance people’s lives through the development of next-generation bionics. We assisted Össur in redesigning their Proprio Foot bionic ankle, and we have also collaborated on numerous other innovative prosthetic design projects.

Connected health devices

WAACS creates new market opportunities by translating consumer insights it finds into concrete product ideas. Together with clients we set up Idea Card sessions to create new concepts, and arrange a time line for future product developments: from quick wins to future visions in health connected devices.

We have successfully applied this method to a variety of projects, for example the development of the smart Target Scale for Medisana. By mapping out the user journey we laid the groundwork for the product and user interface design of this new type of app connected personal scale.

Bracing and orthotics

We are always excited when our work has a big positive impact. That is why we have worked on so many medical braces that are able to improve the user’s quality of life. From post-operative knee braces to sports braces. We have worked for Livit, NEA Push and Össur. We work together with doctors, physiotherapists and patients to improve the functionality, usability and the look & feel of orthotics – from sketch to prototype to commercial product.

Soft goods and smart textiles

We regularly add new techniques to the WAACS design toolbox, for example 3D knitting. The use of 3D knitting techniques similar to Nike’s Flyknit and Adidas’ Primeknit has made it possible to transform the functional compressive supports from premium orthopaedic brand Gibaud into a dynamic looking range that fits perfectly. The smart textile design ensures the braces are in safe dark colors when stationary, but turn into a dynamic display of bright colors when wearing them.

Structural packaging for medical devices

Packaging is a great opportunity to create a more meaningful experience. We have designed patented packaging for chirurgical environments and intuitive designs with a very user-friendly unboxing experience. They can enable the company to interact with customers right before their decision to buy and while using the product. And what better way to build a relationship with customers, by empowering them in selecting just the right product and to inviting them to take a sneak peek? Vanderputte Medical is a large distributors of medical emergency equipment. WAACS used their eco-design tools to assess the environmental impact of plastic first aid kits to create a sustainable alternative.
